Public Housing

Public housing was established to provide decent, safe, and affordable rental housing for low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. There are approximately 1.3 million households in the United States living in public housing units managed by local public housing agencies (PHAs). (There are 26 PHAs in Rhode Island.)

The Woonsocket Housing Authority receives federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide over 1,250 public housing units at rents affordable to low and very low-income families in the City of Woonsocket, Rhode Island. We currently own and operate six developments and 51 units of scattered site public housing.

Housing for Families…
WHA has two family developments, each with nearly 300 units.
Housing is townhouse style at both developments. Unit sizes range from one to four bedrooms. The WHA works hard to keep the property safe for everyone. Extensive modernization work is currently underway at Morin Heights. Family development residents have access to a number of educational, job readiness, life skills training, youth activities, and childcare opportunities to increase their independence and self-sufficiency.

Housing for the Elderly…
The WHA has four high-rises with a total of more than 650 units. The buildings are exceptionally maintained and modernized. All buildings are guarded by a state-of-the art security system and onsite patrols. Community space, recreational equipment, and laundry facilities are available to all residents at each building. Resident Service Coordinators are available to help tenants access a variety of resources, and residents can participate in a range of onsite services. Each high-rise is truly its own unique community, created by the diverse backgrounds and interests of the residents. Social Clubs organize a number of recreational activities, including weekly Bingo.
